Money

Opening a Bank Account

Opening a bank account can be difficult. It is only possible for long-term students. You will need a letter from the school, your passport, proof of your address and details of your bank at home. If you have problems opening an account, our International Student Welfare Officer will be happy to help.

It can take several weeks to open a bank account in the UK so be prepared – bring enough money (in travellers’ cheques and credit cards) to use while you wait.

Always avoid carrying large amounts of cash with you. As in any large city, crime does happen and it is better to be safe than sorry!

Working in London - Employment 'restriction'

If you are a non-EEA citizen and have a student visa for 6 months or more you can usually work, but with restrictions. This means you are able to work 20 hours a week during term-time and as many hours as you like during the holidays.

For more information on working whilst studying please see UKCISA's website.

Cost of Living

London is considered a very expensive city, but it is possible to spend a lot or not so much. Eating at home rather than restaurants will save a lot of money, as will taking the bus rather than the tube.

Here are some examples of what things cost approximately in London. All prices are in Pounds Sterling.

A loaf of bread from 75p
6 eggs from 50p
1kg rice from 75p
500g pasta from 50p
