Health

The NHS

The NHS (National Health Service) is the UK’s state health service. Some services are free, and others must be paid for.

You are only entitled to NHS treatment if you are studying for six months or more.

If you are studying for less than six months, emergency treatment is free but any other services will have to be paid for.

KAE strongly advises all students to organise travel, medical and course insurance.

For more information on health you can download a pdf from UKCOSA’s website

Finding a Doctor

If you are going to be in London for longer than six months you should register with a doctor (GP) close to your house when you arrive. You can find a doctor on the NHS website, www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk, or by calling 0845 4647. Take a school letter to the surgery to register. Visiting the doctor is free.

Other Health Services

Pharmacies/chemists are where you can buy medicine. Even if a doctor has given you a prescription, there will be a charge. Chemists can also give some medical advice. Speak to reception to find your nearest doctor or chemist.

Dentists look after your teeth. Although you can see a dentist on the NHS, there is always a charge for this. You can find a dentist on the NHS website, www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk, or by calling 0845 4647.

Emergencies

In a serious emergency call 999 and ask for an ambulance.

Otherwise you can go to the Accident and Emergency department of the nearest hospital. There is usually a wait so only go in an emergency. For minor problems always see your local doctor.

The nearest hospital to KAE at Notting Hill Gate is St Mary’s Hospital, Praed Street, London W2 Tel: 0207 725 6666.

The nearest hospital to KAE at South Kensington is Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, 369 Fulham Road, London SW10 9NH Tel: 020 8237 2329.
